Working in a career you enjoy makes going to work a pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, after some late nights, even those of us that love our jobs still want to hit snooze when the alarm goes off early in the morning. But overall, I’m eager to get in the office and start working.
I’ve never had the experience of having a “terrible” job. I’ve had jobs that others might think are terrible such as telemarketing or washing dishes, but even those jobs had some positive sides. (Think free food at the restaurant and wearing slippers while telemarketing.) But, I’ve had the pleasure of holding some jobs that I just love, and that is when you realize that it is not just a job, it is much more.
Last week, I had the pleasure of handing over the house keys to Daniel Snow, Habitat’s newest homeowner. The smile on Daniel’s face, the overwhelming emotions, it was just amazing. I was in awe of what the community had accomplished through their combined financial support and volunteer time. Together, we made a home for Daniel Snow.
It was amazing to play a role in making this dream come true for Daniel. He is one of the reasons I love my job.
If you are one of those who goes to work each day, but doesn’t really enjoy your job, I encourage you to explore new opportunities. I’m not encouraging anyone to just up and quit their job because it isn’t perfect. No job is perfect. Rather, I am encouraging you to be bold, step out of your comfort zone and be open to new opportunitites that may come your way. You may be surprised as to what is around the corner.
Before I accepted my current position, I had a great job. Nice hours, interesting work, fun co-workers, good paycheck and excellent health insurance. But, I felt I was missing something. And now, as I have the privilege to hand the keys over to new homeowners, I realize I’ve found what I was missing.
